Design Brief

1. Title: Department of Nursing Wall Mural. The department of nursing is in need of a wall mural in hopes to expand their identity on the Auraria Campus.

2. Project Participants: Terry Buxton, Ranae Gregson, Mallory Brunel, Alejandra Merjil, Julia Bryan, Laura Woodward.

3. General introduction: We are working for the Department of Nursing on the Metropolitan State University of Denver campus, to create a wall mural that will expand and bring identity to their department. The scope of this projects is a 72 inch floor to ceiling wall mural that will be located to the right of their department entrance.

4. Problem Identification: Students and staff are having a difficult time trying to find the department of nursing office due to the lack of visual signage or way finding features. We are design a service for the department of nursing, to aid in their visual presence on campus. The issues that we must over come are using a pre painted wall with small discrepancies that may interfere with the piece, the including of photos, and narrowing down the content. The single messages that must be communicated is the inclusion of all people, the sense of inclusivity, and the feeling of being welcomed into a distinguished profession. The message that this mural should evoke is, diversity, inclusiveness, care, kindness, and the over all modern ideals of nursing for the future.

5. Client Product/Service Analysis: The goals of the client are that the Nursing departments needs more recognition, and student in this career choice. The purpose of this project is for the main nursing office to be highly visible and welcoming. We are producing this service to help the nursing department to further expand their nursing education recognition to every person that may seem interested in the program. This client wants to no longer be hidden in the shadows in this small corridor with a larger and more populated space.

Enthusiastic

The difference that this service will make is that the population on the Auraria camps will know and recognize the nursing department, and ultimately grow their college of study by attracting more students to pursue nursing.

The benefit of this service will provide is visibility, presence, boldness, education, and encouragement.

6. Audience Considerations: The anticipated audience is firstly the nursing students and staff that we are created the mural for. Secondly, the mural will be for the uninformed students that do not know there is a nursing department. This mural will help education and notify the people who walk by it. This will be all demographics that are included on the Auraria Campus.

7. World view, Historical and Social Contexts: This mural will inform the student and staff population of what the modern day nursing profession has to offer. They have a stigma that they are all women who wear white caps and bring medicine to sick people. The nursing department is stressing the fact that they want to be seen with a new modern and technological advanced medical profession, that is inclusive to all forms of diversity. This mural will shed new light on what it means to be a nurse. The elements of tradition are what hold back the ideas of what people think nursing is. The design should bring the nursing profession out of the past and into a futuristic light.

8. Positioning and Communication Strategy:  The primary purpose of this design is to bring attention to the nursing departments presence on campus. The messages that will be in the design is one of inspiration and education of what the nursing profession has to offer. The meanings that will be inferred that are left out of the design is the traditional view of what nursing used to be compared to what it is now.

9. Pragmatic Issues: The noise I can foresee is the clashing of the designs that are already present in the hallways. They wanted to consider dividing the mural into two different panels that can reach around the corner. Moving beyond the AHEC’s guidelines is not going to be approved. We will have to convinced them that the standard option 3 will work for them. The competition will be within my class, and designing a strong mural design that will be chosen before my classmates.
